The Story of Haleʻiwa Store Lots in Iconic Haleʻiwa, HI
Haleʻiwa Store Lots was built upon a commitment to supporting North Shore merchants and residents in the historic Haleʻiwa town. For example, the iconic Matsumoto Shave Ice has called Haleʻiwa its home for more than half a century, becoming a familiar, cherished presence to many locals.
Before development began, there was a vision to build a space entirely intended to support local merchants and reinforce the “mom and pop” nature of small businesses that populate this tightly knit community of Haleʻiwa, HI.
Development called for the preservation of five historic buildings that were rehabilitated and adaptively reused for the construction and redevelopment of the store lots. In addition, seven new buildings were constructed, each accurately matching the design guidelines of the five original buildings to create a fitting, organic match within the project as a whole.
A historical reference to the site’s original name – Waialua Store Lots – Haleʻiwa Store Lots will preserve and retain the rural character of Haleʻiwa Town by merging old and new in a cohesive, safe, and historically authentic way. Haleʻiwa Store Lots will share Haleʻiwa’s history of people and place through plantation-era buildings, sustain Hawaiʻi-owned retail and dining businesses, and ensure long-term viability of this special place.
The result is an open-air retail center, spanning 27,000 square feet, offering gathering spaces and courtyards for both local residents and visitors to enjoy. Haleʻiwa Store Lots pays homage to the plantation and surf culture of the area with its vibrant architecture and community-focused development in Haleʻiwa, HI.
