A Plantation-Inspired Experience:
Haleʻiwa Shops and Restaurants
Architecture
Haleʻiwa Store Lots, a unique collection of Haleʻiwa shops, restaurants and services, now stands in an area that housed five historic buildings, including the building housing Matsumoto Shave Ice and two Yoshida buildings built in the early 1900s. With the construction of the store lots, the new architecture included landscaping that now separates pedestrians from vehicles, assists drainage, added 95 parking stalls to the rear of the project and provides additional retail space for local businesses.
The start of construction culminated from a two-year long consultation with Haleʻiwa community members, area kūpuna, neighborhood board, Historic Hawaii Foundation, the State Historic Preservation Division, the City and many other vital voices. Feedback from these groups has helped improve the project’s design and resulted in an architectural scheme that preserves the site’s historic qualities, rural scale and character. The store lots is an eclectic mix of buildings, painted in different colors, and designed to appear as if they had organically been built up over time.
Open-air Space
A stroll through the store lots provides visitors will an open-air concept that harnesses the beauty of the North Shore breeze and year-round sunny weather. Our impressive array of Haleʻiwa shops and restaurants are complimented by many benches, ample lanai space and natural sunshade to make Haleʻiwa Store Lots a memorable, family-friendly experience.
First Public Walkway
With input from North Shore residents, guidance from the North Shore Sustainable Communities Plan and insight from staff of the City & County of Honolulu, Haleʻiwa Store Lots constructed a new walkway. Finished in December 2014, the path was fashioned to replace the standard urban curb-and-gutter sidewalk with a more rural-friendly, safe promenade, stamped to assimilate the wooden planked boardwalks of yesteryear. The 650 foot walkway, bookended by the Waialua end of the store lots and Mahaulu Lane, is part of the one-mile stretch of the Haleʻiwa town revitalization, a catalyst project of Kamehameha Schools’ North Shore Master Plan.
Amenities
In addition to its Haleʻiwa shops and eateries, store lots conveniently provides amenities and pit stop needs for the quintessential circle-island road trip. In addition to the wide variety of snacks and gourmet dishes, the lots offer families and visitors a full parking lot in the back of the project, two bus parking stalls, new fully-stocked bathrooms, and much more.
Locally owned shops and businesses make Haleʻiwa Store Lots a special and unique destination.
